Department 7 is the fictitious organization player characters are assumed to belong to in the D20 Modern role playing game.
From the D20 Modern System Reference Document:
Department-7 is a fictional elite organization that the heroes belong to that deals with situations threatening the modern world. Depending on the campaign, Department-7 might have federal authority, or it might be a state or local agency, or perhaps a private institution. In some campaigns, it might have an international scope thanks to ties to the United Nations or some global conglomerate. Department-7 might deal with homeland defense, law enforcement, espionage and intelligence, or counterterrorism. In some games, it might have a charter to investigate paranormal activity or alien incursions or dimensional displacement.
It is our hope that other publishers will use Department-7 as an example in their products, thereby providing a common feel for the game.
Depending on the style of game being played, Department 7 (D7 for short) might represent the FBI's X-Files department, the mysterious Warehouse 13 agency, the Alernity rpg's Hoffmann Institute, or similar quasi-legal group of investigators and troubleshooters. Likewise, a more down to earth realistic game might see D7 as a branch of the FBI, CIA, Interpol, or any other military, government or law enforcement agency. It's really left up to the game master and campaign style to decide exactly.
While D7 here will take on some bits of specificity, it's my intent to keep things in this generic spirit for the most part, to make things useful to any D20 Modern or Future game.
This site will be a repository for game aid material, ideas, news and opinions, some of which will be presented "in character", allowing such articles to be used as player handouts or props. In my campaign, and hopefully others, this blog is the "real world internet" version of the D7 website the actual PC agents can access in the game setting to connect with headquarters while in the field.
